Dutch Oven Lasagna

Lasagna is a great recipe to make in a Dutch oven and here are Dutch oven lasagna recipes for you to try.  Tell me which one you like the best.

Note: Cooking time can be reduced by pre-cooking and draining the lasagna noodles.

Dutch Oven Lasagna

1-1/2 lb. lean ground beef
23 oz spaghetti sauce
9 oz shredded mozzarella cheese
3 eggs
2-1/4 cup cottage or ricotta cheese
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
13 lasagna noodles
1-1/2 tsp oregano
1 1/4 cup hot water

Preheat the Dutch oven and brown the ground beef. When done, remove the beef to a large mixing bowl.  Add the spaghetti sauce to the beef and mix well. In another bowl, add the cottage or ricotta cheese, Parmesan cheese, mozzarella cheese (reserve a few ounces for later), eggs, and oregano, and mix well.

Now create lasagna layers in the Dutch oven in the following order: Break up four lasagna noodles into the bottom of the oven. Spread about 1/3 of the meat mixture over the noodles. Spread 1/2 of the cheese mixture over the meat mixture. Break up five noodles and place over the top of the preceding mixtures. Spread 1/2 of the remaining meat mixture over the noodles. Spread the remaining cheese mixture over the meat mixture. Break up the remaining noodles and place over the cheese mixture. Spread the remaining meat mixture over the noodles.

Pour the hot water all around the edges of the oven. Place the lid on the oven and bake one hour or until done. Check frequently.

This recipe works well with charcoal (12 briquettes on bottom and 12 on top).

Dutch Oven Lasagna #2

1 box lasagna noodles, uncooked
1 pound ground beef
1 jar spaghetti sauce
1 can (14.5 oz) tomato sauce
1 pound mozzarella, grated or cut into strips
1 cup parmesan cheese
1 container of cottage cheese
2 eggs

First make the meat sauce mixture:  Brown hamburger meat in skill and drain. Add the spaghetti sauce and tomato sauce to meat mixture.

Now make the cheese mixture: mix the eggs, and all the cheeses together in a mixing bowl.

In a large Dutch oven layer as follows: ½ sauce mixture, layer of noodles, ½ cheese mixture, repeat. Bake 45 minutes to 1 hour in a 12” oven with 17 coals on top and 8 coals on the bottom.

That’s true, but these recipes are to be cooked outside on the grill, campfire, dutch oven. So I can’t give you degrees to put the oven on. But I should be able to indicate what they could be cooked at and then you’ll need to use a chart or formula or trial and error to determine the number of charcoal briquettes to use, compensating for temperature and wind.

      Each white hot charcoal equals about 30 degrees. 12 X 30 = 360 degrees

About how many servings would recipe #2 make?

  1. We made lasagna #1 today and I have a few suggestions. A little seasoning in the meat, we used 1 lb lean burger and 1/2 lb italian sausage. We used 1 1/2 times sauce and only had marinara but it worked great. Next time we’re adding onion and a little garlic to the meat as well as some sliced mushrooms. I also cooked it for an hour and 20 minutes (probable because of the extra sauce). We definitely call it a winner the very first time. Good recipe, thanks so much!

    1. Great suggestions, glad you enjoyed it, Gary!
